UOIT Receives GM-donated Vehicle!   UOIT Receives GM-donated Vehicle! After anxiously awaiting the arrival for several weeks, UOIT received its GM-donated vehicle the morning of Thursday, October 22.

UOIT EcoCAR

Welcome to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) EcoCAR website. We are one of three Canadian universities chosen to participate in the EcoCAR: The Next Challenge automotive engineering competition. The EcoCAR competition aims to convert a GM-donated crossover vehicle into a very ecofriendly vehicle. UOIT chose it's vehicle architecture to include a fully electric vehicle.

UOIT owns Canada's largest electric vehicle fleet. Electric buses, pick-up trucks, electric bicycles, even a hydrogren hybrid electric wheel chair!

UOIT has Canada's only Bachelor level automotive enginering program. The EcoCAR competition will showcase UOIT's capacity to train the next generation of engineers for North America's automobile industry.

The UOIT team is advised by Dr. Greg Rograuer, academic director of the new General Motor Automotive Centre of Excellence, and Dr. Mikael Eklund.

The EcoCAR Challenge

The EcoCAR Challenge is a student engineering competition that alllows universities, automakers, the government and advanced technology companies to collaborate with students across North America to achieve more fuel efficient vehicles.

Training Future Engineers

The main goal of the EcoCAR Challenge is to train future engineers and develop designs and ideas that will advance the level of automobile technology to produce vehicles that are capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining the performance standards expected from modern consumers.

Year 2 Goals

  • Convert our GM donated vehicle to a full function electric vehicle capable of completing all dynamic events in May 2010 at the GM-proving grounds in Yuma, Arizona.
  • Incorporate technologies that reduce petroleum energy consumption on the basis of a total fuel cycle well-to-wheel (WTW) analysis.
  • Increase vehicle energy efficiency.
  • Reduce criteria and WTW greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria emissions.
  • Maintain consumer acceptability in the areas of performance, utility and safety.
